Linux is Awesome

I should point out that I used MS windows xp (and before that w95 and w98). It is insecure. Switching to Firefox in Windows saved me for a while. Then I have to worry about what firewall I should get. Then what anti-virus software I should run. To top it all I am getting a message from Microsoft that I may be running pirated software that’s after I bought a licensed CD of XP from one of their legitimate vendors. This was back in 2004.

Since then I’ve tried Mac and Linux. I am now using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick, the latest version of a popular linux distribution. I don’t have to worry about malware and Ubuntu has proven to be stable. No more anti-virus software running in the background eating up precious cpu cycles. Linux uses the ext3/ext4 file system so I don’t have to worry about fragmentation of the hard drives. Linux uses iptables for its default network filter and since Ubuntu is designed to operate with all its ports closed, I don’t have to worry about firewalls.

In fact, I was skeptical about all these security defaults. After many hours in the forum and many questions at linux gurus, I soon settle down to enjoying the web and using my computer as I should.
